Broken Bones / Fractures
Fractures occur when there is more force applied to the bone than the bone can absorb. Bones break when they are twisted. Broken bones occur from falls and trauma. Many times bones are broken in accidents. There are many kinds of fractures. A comminuted fracture is if the break is in 3 or more pieces. This is a severe fracture. A compression fracture is when the bone is crushed, making the bone appear to be wider. An open, or compound, fracture is a fracture which causes the bone to be visible through the skin. A closed fracture is when the bone is broken but the skin is intact. Treatment can include casting or surgery. Internal fixation is the placement of metal rods with pins inside the bone.
