Burn Injuries
Burn injuries are determined according to the extent of injury. The depth of the burn injury is classified as first, second or third degree. A first degree burn is limited to the epidermis or upper layer of the skin. These burns are moist, red and very painful. The most common type of first degree burn is a sun burn. A second degree burn penetrates more deeply into the skin and destroys all layers of the epidermis and several layers of the dermis. These burns are usually categorized as superficially deep. These are extremely painful and hypersensitive to touch. Healing can take up to four weeks. Thick scars may result. Third degree burns involve destruction of the epidermal and dermal layers as well as extending in to the subterraneous tissue. The skin is charred and often depressed from the surrounding tissue. These burns are usually not painful because all nerve endings have been destroyed. Burns can be caused when automobiles, gas tanks and airplanes explode. These injuries are referred to as flash injuries. Burns can be caused by chemicals. They also can be caused by electricity as the current goes through the body as it is converting into heat.
